Brown completes a great double with Northern victory adding to his national success
English Amateur Champion Dan Brown was in sparkling form to add the Northern title to his national crown.
The Masham golfer cruised to a nine-shot victory in the North of England Open Amateur championship at Alwoodley, with Cavendish’s George Bloor – the man he beat by two holes in the English final at Ganton – a distant second.
Brown led by two at the halfway stage following a pair of one under-par 70s and added consecutive 71s in difficult conditions as Bloor shot a closing 77 for the runners-up spot. Middleton Hall’s Jack Yule was third after his second round 66 – the best of the tournament – pushed him into contention. But he would also only manage a 74 in the final round.
Carus Green’s Adam Chapman, looking for a third consecutive victory, had to settle for 293 and a share of fourth place with Malton and Norton’s David Hague (74-71-73-75) and Wath’s Nick Poppleton (70-75-72-76).
Almost 160 players submitted entries for one of the Northern Counties flagship events and more than half of the field were plus-two or better, with 20 of the top 30 players on England Golf’s Order of Merit taking part.
