Club golfers heading to Sawgrass

Sawgrass beckons for a group of North East-based golfers, while more have reached the final qualifying stage to earn a trip to the host venue of The Players.

Whitburn trio Tony Jager, Dennis Elrick and David Watson – along with Consett’s Dave Cramond – qualified for the National Hole in One Pairs Playoff Finals in 2023 following a successful trip to Gleneagles. Now, the foursome are just 18 holes away from qualifying for the Grand Final at Sawgrass.

They’ll be hoping to join another Whitburn member, Duncan Foster, who has already booked his place in the field at Sawgrass next year after he made a hole-in-one at Beamish and came through a Playoff Final at Silloth.

Meanwhile, Whickham’s Colin Teasdale decided he’d take a much more direct route by recording the Hole in One Club’s first ace of the season on April 2 at Whickham’s 17th hole, and secured a place on the trip to the US.

Members of the Hole in One Club pay an annual £10 fee to have the opportunity of winning a seat on the plane to Sawgrass for the Hole in One Club Grand Finals – which they can do by scoring a hole-in-one in a club competition or by winning one of the HIO Pairs Series events, which are held at 23 qualifying venues around the UK.
