City of Newcastle Ladies’ Section celebrates centenary

The Ladies’ Section of City of Newcastle Golf Club celebrated its centenary with a luncheon on Saturday May 31 ahead of a special event on the course on June 6.

Among the 93 guests at the luncheon were club president Bob Stoddart, men’s captain Phil Tennant, ladies’ county president Audrey Pattison, county captain Julie Sampson, lady county veterans captain Linda Hoyle Streets, archivist Sue Hodgson and John Pearson – secretary of the Women Golfers’ Museum at St Andrews.

As part of the event, a new garden sculpture, donated by the Ladies’ Section, was unveiled at the club by Catherine McKinnell MP.

Ladies captain Angie Heads said: “I would like to thank all those who helped with our special celebration – the bar staff, Judith who arrived before 8am to help set up the tables, Glen the chef and his catering team, our brilliant office staff – Fern and Matthew, the amazing committee, Kath Muir and Chris Pollock for the stunning flower displays, Janette Fellows for all her hard work on the table and seating plan, and Sharon for all her support and time spent showing us how the Ladies’ Section has become what it is today through her memorabilia display. I must also thank my husband, Graeme, for his time and patience – and all our friends who helped us with the gardens in preparation for our big day.

“Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey and made it such a special day.”

In the Centenary Trophy, which brought together more than 60 players, Justine Stewart led the field with 42 stableford points as Dawn Ward finished second.

City of Newcastle will welcome the best three-player teams from each county for the English Women’s Champion Club event on August 30-31. The 36-hole strokeplay event has been played since 2023, with the best two scores from each team counting on both days. The event, which was won by North Hants in 2024, will be another highlight of the centenary year.
