Eight-year-old is the star of the show once again
Carus Green’s Chloé Spencer has recorded a hat-trick victory in the club’s Junior End of Year Championship to finish off her season.
Eight-year-old Chloé, who won the event in 2014 and 2015, picked up her first set of plastic golf clubs aged two and competed in Carus’ Saturday junior roll-up – the initiative started six years ago by Carus PGA professional Andrew Pickering in an attempt to introduce youngsters to the game. Just three children turned up for the first competition back in 2009. Today, up to 25 youngsters compete each Saturday with more than 40 making up the club’s junior section.
Eighteen players took part in this year’s championship, with Chloé taking the girl’s trophy and seven-year-old Luke Rainford winning the boys title in the event which tests a range of skills and is run by PGA professionals Dave Turner, Andrew Pickering and Lee Edwards.
“The weekly junior competitions have become more and more popular since their launch,” said Turner. “We have never missed a session, even when the weather has been against us.
“We are delighted for Chloé and Luke, and all the children who have worked very hard throughout the year,” added Pickering. “The junior development programme is very important to us.”
