Callaway launches Opus SP wedges

Callaway has released its latest wedge range – Opus SP – featuring Spin Pocket construction and tour-preferred shaping with a higher centre of gravity for more spin and precision.

The wedges (RRP £179) come in a range of nine lofts from 48° to 64° with five different grinds options to suit a variety of course conditions and play styles. The wedges are also available in two finishes – Tour Chrome and Black Shadow.

The SP in the name stands for Spin Pocket – a design developed from a new two-piece construction. Underneath the lower part of the face is a hollowed cavity designed to raise the centre of gravity of the wedge above the ball, lowering launch and raising spin.

The amount of weight moved higher and the size of the pocket depends on the loft of the wedge, creating a progressive centre of gravity design through the range. More weight is moved up with a larger pocket in the lob wedges, while adjustments to the shape of the head and hosel also help change the centre of gravity to position. It is highest in the lob wedges (60-64°) and lowest in the pitching wedge (48°).

The range also features the new Spin Gen 2.0 face with a 17° groove angle and tighter spacing delivering more groove edge contact for more consistent spin across a variety of lies. Combined with a deeper crosshatch laser pattern across the face, Spin Gen 2.0 produces more stopping power than the previous design.
