Having watched the best players in the world hit bunker shots which stop abruptly, you may think you need to create a very aggressive angle of attack to escape greenside bunkers. However, more often than not, this leads to inconsistency as the leading edge of the club digs too deep into the sand or misses the sand all together and strikes the back of the ball at speed.
If you’re inconsistent from the sand, try a very simple change in your setup – take a wider stance.
This change will help create a shallower angle of attack, bringing the club into the sand behind the ball more consistently and allowing you to work on extracting the ball consistently.
Work out where you strike the sand and how this affects the ball’s height and speed. Once you’re getting out every time, you can begin to build a feel for different shots and how small changes can make a big difference with this kind of bunker shot.
