Bishop’s Stortford win the Women’s Champion Club at City of Newcastle

Bishop’s Stortford trio Harriet Buchan, Jackie Foster and Haley Yerxa won the English Women’s Champion Club title at City of Newcastle Golf Club.

The team from Hertfordshire finished on one over-par – six shots clear of second-placed North Hants (Hampshire) after a terrific final day for Haley and Jackie on Sunday. Haley made four birdies and an eagle to post 70 (three under-par) on the second and final day, while Jackie shot 72 for the team’s two counting scores – the only under-par score from any team across the two days of action.

Bishop’s Stortford had led after day one thanks to steady performances from Haley (75) and Harriet (76), sitting just a shot clear.

North Hants’ team of Aimee Paterson, Gemma Burgess and Georgina Carter secured second spot with a seven over-par team total. Chelmsford finished third on 14 over-par thanks to Lauren Gowers and Lily Frost.

The third staging of the national event took place at City of Newcastle as the club celebrated the centenary of its women’s section.

Club director and championship coordinator Louise Lewis said: “We were honoured and delighted to host the third England Golf Women’s Champion Club event. It is even more special as our women’s section celebrates its centenary this year. We were delighted that so many teams travelled so far to compete, and our staff and volunteers worked extremely hard to ensure the competition was an experience the players will remember.”
