Yorkshire’s best put on a show at Ganton

The best male professionals and amateurs from across Yorkshire came together to put on a spectacular showcase of golf at Ganton.

The second edition of The Match, pitting the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs’ men’s team against a team of professionals from the 2020protour, was staged at Ganton – with the professionals winning overall.

The 12-strong 2020protour team – 11 of whom have come through the amateur system in Yorkshire – featured several DP World Tour winners, including Porsche European Open winner Marcus Armitage, Open de France and Joburg Open winner Dan Bradbury, ISPS HANDA World Invitational winner Dan Brown, ISPS Handa World Invitational and Ras Al Khaimah Championship winner Dan Gavins, and AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open winner John Parry, as well as Sam Bairstow, George Ash, Joe Dean, Chris Hanson, George Mason, Adam Walker, and special invitee Marco Penge.

The amateur team, captained by David Appleyard, featured England’s men’s squad member Tom Osborne and 2023 English Amateur winner Ben Brown, along with 2024 Yorkshire Amateur champion Jake Sowden as well as 2024 Yorkshire Matchplay champion Oli Caton, R&A Student Tour Series Final winner Lucas Martin, Habib Khan, George Hanson, Lewis Harrison, Matt Dolling, Charlie Daughtrey, Bailey Hird, and Nathan Ali.

Each of the professional teams was victorious over 18 holes, with several close matches in the balance over the final holes.

Some 1,500 spectators enjoyed the matches over the historic Ganton layout – with the professionals hosting clinics on the range before teeing off as the event raised £1,400 for Dementia Forward.
