Yorkshire win Northern Counties Seniors title

Hopes of a Northumberland hat-trick in the Northern Counties team championships were dashed at Wearside Golf Club as Yorkshire took the Seniors title.

A tight finish saw Yorkshire tie with Lancashire with a team total of 748 – Yorkshire claiming victory with the better second round total.

Having seen their men’s team and juniors notch championship success, Northumberland were hoping for a third title in 2021, but couldn’t find the winning formula at wet and windy Wearside as Steve Findlay was their only player to finish in the top 10 with two rounds of 75.

Durham’s hopes flourished briefly with Stuart Brown (pictured) posting rounds of 74 and 72 to finish runner-up in the individual championship behind Lancashire’s Gary Lacy (72-72) and John Kirkpatrick in third place (75-72), but they too slipped back.

Lancashire led for much of the day with the leaderboard complicated by each team being allowed to discount the poorest score of their six players, but Yorkshire’s second round total of 370 gave them a clear win over Lancashire’s 381.

Cheshire took third place with a score of 755, followed by Cumbria on 757, Durham on 758, Northumberland 773 and Isle of Man on 795.
