St Andrews is Sean’s Eden

Our region’s success at the Home of Golf continued in August as Houghton-le-Spring’s Sean Foster won the Eden Trophy.

Sean, a three handicapper, qualified in 11th place for the matchplay rounds with scores of 76 and 71 before beating Baberton’s Douglas Waugh 2&1 in the final at the Eden Course.

He said: “To get a win at St Andrews is incredible. I’ve been playing in the Eden Trophy since 2014 and this year was the first time I’ve made the cut. To go all the way to the final was a bit of surprise, but I’m delighted to have won.

“My game was really solid each day, particularly when playing in the strong winds. I was also super confident on the greens, I felt like I could hole everything from 15ft – a great feeling to have when you’re playing matchplay. The Eden is a great event and I’ll be back to defend my title.”

Meanwhile, Houghton-le-Springs’ Emily Baxter shot rounds of 78 and 76 to qualify in fifth place for the Strathtyrum Tournament and was awarded the Speir Salver for the lowest nett score.
