Smart move

Brian Smart moved a step closer to a round of a lifetime when he came through the Bridgestone Chase Your Dream Trophy regional final.

The 48-year-old 10-handicapper from Alnmouth kept alive his dream of a place in the British Masters pro am when he shot a nett 75 at Bolton Old Links.

Now he heads to England Golf Week this month at Frilford Heath for the national finals of the Chase Your Dream Trophy, where the top team in the Bridgestone Challenge will head for the British Masters at Walton Heath.

“I tried to throw it away on the last two but got away with it,” said Brian. “It was quite windy and the greens were very fast.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the qualifier at Bolton and I’m looking forward to the next round at Frilford, where hopefully I will play well.

“This is a great tournament and it would be great to progress to the pro am at the Bridgestone Challenge and then pro am at the British Masters.”

Brian qualified for the event by winning the Centenary Plate at Alnmouth last season. He will be joined at Frilford by Malton and Norton’s Jonny Dunning, Declan Stoppard from Doncaster, Ben Brown from Masham and John Freeman of Willow Valley.
