Serial winners

Serial winners Tom Smith and Will Skipp returned to the spotlight with victory in the final of the Northumberland and Durham Inter-County Foursomes Championship.

The Durham pair captured a second title in four years for Eaglesclife Golf Club with a 3&2 victory over Morpeth Golf Club’s Sandy Twynholm and Phil Graham at South Shields Golf Club.

Four-time NYSD champion and reigning Northern Masters champion Tom partnered Durham County Boys captain Will, who lifted last year’s Northern Federation Juniors crown as well as winning his third Durham County Boys Championship.

Tom and Will lost in the final to City of Newcastle in 2016 before Tom partnered Sam Donald to the club’s first inter-county crown for 38 years when they beat Ponteland at Consett in 2017.

“We’ve only been behind twice in the six rounds played,” said Tom. “Once today, at the first hole and that was my fault – I’m happy to admit that – but after that we just putted very well.”

The Morpeth pair reached the inter-county final by beating Hexham one-up in the Northumberland final while the Eaglecliffe pair beat Bishop Auckland 5&4 in the Durham final.
