The youngest golfers in our region are set to benefit from more events thanks to the success of the Winter Series Junior Texas Scrambles at Matfen Hall.
The events, organised by Bedlingtonshire’s Mark Sanderson, have brought together teams from clubs including Matfen Hall, Bedlingtonshire, Wearside, George Washington, Allendale, Alnwick, Longhirst and more throughout the winter months.
Each event saw 60-80 juniors take to the course, with victory for the teams from Matfen Hall, Morpeth, Allendale and a mixed team known as the Ice Men.
Mark said: “It’s been really inspiring to see how much the kids have enjoyed coming down to Matfen despite winter weather.
“Having seen how successful the Junior Golf Tour is, I wanted to give juniors aged 5-13 a fun format to keep them engaged through the winter months, and to get the support of Matfen Hall with use of the par three course has made it possible.
“We’ll be keeping it going this summer and hosting more events next winter.”
Following the success of the winter series, which was supported by Ian Harvey from The Golf Foundation, two summer Texas scramble events will take place at Bedlingtonshire – on August 26 and September 23 – with another winter series planned for Matfen Hall at the end of the season.
The summer events are open to CONGU registered juniors – who will play from the yellow/red tees over 18 holes – and non-CONGU registered juniors – who will play from the forward blue tees over nine holes. It costs £20 per team of four, per event. For more info email
