Rosie fourth in Rose event

Rosie Belsham added another highlight to her 2019 season with a fourth place finish in the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship in Portugal as Yorkshire’s Ben Schmidt won the boys’ event by 15 shots.

Whitley Bay-based Rosie finished eight shots behind girls’ winner Mimi Rhodes from Somerset. She shot rounds of 81, 77 and 73 to take fourth place in the 12-girl field as Jess Baker finished in eighth place after receiving a late invitation to the event.

A past winner of the Northern Golfer Junior Champion of Champions title, plus-three handicappper Rosie has a string of top 10 finishes this year, including a win in the Fairhaven Trophy and a second place finish in the English Women’s Strokeplay Championship.

In the boys’ event, Rotherham-based Ben put the gloss on a superb year by winning in record-breaking fashion at Quinta do Lago.

He shot rounds of 68, 69 and 69 to lead the field on 10 under-par. Aaron Marshall took second place with a three-round total of 221.

“It’s been a fantastic year for me with the Brabazon Trophy and Carris Trophy already on the mantelpiece and now this as well,” said Ben – who has decided against signing up to a US college and will instead play an elite amateur schedule next year.

Setup by The Daily Telegraph in 1985, past champions of the event include Justin Rose, Matt Fitzpatrick and Melissa Reid.
