The region’s best amateurs and a host of professionals set out in Regional Qualifying and Final Qualifying for The Open Championship at Carnoustie with a handful coming close to making it into the season’s third major.
Marcus Armitage will fly the flag for our region at Carnoustie having posted a 36-hole total of 10 under-par at St Annes Old Links to book his place in The Open.
Garrick Porteous came close to qualifying, ultimately finishing in a tie for fifth place at The Renaissance Club. There were also good results from David Hague (Malton & Norton) and Alex Fitzpatrick (Hallamshire) who finished in a tie for sixth place at Notts (Hollinwell), and Nick McCarthy (Moortown) who finished in a tie for eighth place at St Annes Old Links.
In Regional Qualifying at Goswick in Northumberland, Workington-based amateur William Bowe topped the leaderboard with a superb four under-par 68. Meanwhile Hartelpool youngster Jack Ainscough and Bedlingtonshire pro Matthew Webb progressed through a five-man playoff for fours spots having shot rounds of 71.
In Regional Qualifying at Alwoodley in Yorkshire, Darlington’s Andrew Wilson progressed to Final Qualifying before missing out on a spot in The Open.
