Rachel leads England girls

Rachel Gourley returned to the national stage as she led England’s U16 girls in their win over Switzerland at Heswall Golf Club.

Arcot Hall-based Rachel represented England against Spain earlier this season and added to her international experience at Heswall with a 1up singles victory over Magareta Roos as England swept the afternoon singles session to win the match 4.5-1.5.

Rachel, 15, said: “I was a lot less nervous going into the match as I’d learned a lot from the match against Spain earlier this season. It was different being one of the experienced players out of the four and having something to say rather than just listening to everything that was going on.

“I really enjoyed the experience. Being more relaxed helped and I played well to turn my singles match around with two birdies at the 15th and 16th to go from 1dn to 1up, and then finish it off at the 17th and 18th.

“It’s been a really busy summer but I’m happy with how I’m playing since moving up from the U14 events and I’m looking forward to the last few events of the season.”
