Nicky dominates juniors’ order of merit

Barnard Castle’s Nicky Lee-Shield finished the Mizuno Durham County Golf Union Junior Order of Merit in fine style, winning the event’s Grand Final at Wynyard Golf Club by five shots to claim the overall title.

Nicky posted a round of 72 at Wynyard in the final event of the season-long points race to claim the gross title in the order of merit. Meanwhile, Wynyard’s Alex Boyes became the boys nett champion and Sophie Murray from Consett was crowned girls nett winner.

The Wynyard event, the 17th of the order of merit season, completed Nicky’s sensational year – one in which he never finished outside of the top eight.

During the season, he won junior opens at Barnard Castle and Consett, tied for top spot in Boldon’s junior open and won the DCGUJ George Crawford Cup at Hartlepool. He also finished second in junior opens at Blackwell Grange and Tyneside while picking up another eight top 10 finishes.

At the Grand Final, Consett’s Stephen Turnbull finished in second place as Alex won the nett prize.
