Mat’s perfect finish

Mathew Webb returned to the UK, having started his year on the China Tour and playing around Asia, to lift the PGA North Region Championship trophy.

Bedlingtonshire-based Mathew, a past winner of the PGA Assistants Championship and a winner of events at home and overseas in recent years, posted two rounds of 67 to lead the field at Bolton Old Links as David Shacklady finished in second place, two shots back at eight under-par.

“It’s great to be back home and back playing some good golf,” said Mathew.

“I started my year out in China and I struggled with my game in the early events. Since then I’ve felt a little bit of pressure and things haven’t been right. I’ve worked hard in the last few weeks and I feel like my game is in much better shape now.” Mathew, 28, has travelled across Asia and Australia in the last couple of years and isn’t ruling out a return to China later this season – where he holds a full card on the China Tour. In the coming weeks though, his focus is on the PGA North Region Order of Merit, where he is in second place following the event at Bolton Old Links.

Mathew will be competing in the Leeds Cup at Leeds Golf Club and the James Brearley Lancashire Open at Blackpool North Shore as he looks to book his place in the PGA Play-Offs in Turkey.
