Mark Wharton returned to his finest form to capture his second Northumberland County Championship at Westerhope Golf Club.
Having come through a week of tough matches to reach Saturday’s final, Mark produced some of the best golf of the week as he completed a 9&7 victory over Westerhope’s Brad Robinson in the 36-hole final.
Mark, from Newcastle United Golf Club, chipped in for eagle at the 18th hole of the match before lunch and continued to extend his advantage in the afternoon round, reaching 12 under-par by the time he returned to the 11th hole.
He said: “It’s a great feeling to have my hands on the County Championship trophy again, I didn’t know whether I’d ever be able to reach the same level as I did when I won back in 2016. It’s a great honour to be a two-time champion, there are a lot of great names on this trophy twice. To match one of the achievements of a player like Chris Paisley is tremendous.
“The supporters have been great all week and I have to say a big thank you to my caddy John Simmons and all the people that have come out to watch us.”
