Hexham Golf Club’s Matty Lamb won the prestigious Hampshire Hog tournament at North Hants Golf Club, breaking the amateur course record previously held by Justin Rose en-route to the title.
Matty, who returned to the UK following events in Australia, Portugal and Spain over the winter, produced a final round 63 to finish two shots clear of the elite field. Sam Bairstow of Hallowes Golf Club finished runner-up with rounds of 70 and 65.
Matty said: “I was very pleased with my performance at the Hampshire Hog. It’s always nice to shoot a good score when you need to and my game is looking good for the rest of the year.”
Past winners of the Hampshire Hog include Michael Bonallack, who won the opening event and returned 22 years later to win again, along with Peter McEvoy and Gary Wolstenholme.
The win follows Matty’s top 10 finish in the Portuguese International Amateur and qualifying in seventh place in the strokeplay stage of the Spanish International Amateur. The plus-five handicapper and former England Boys captain will compete in the Lytham Trophy, and French and Irish amateurs in May ahead of a busy summer schedule in the UK and Europe.
