Harrison celebrates pro order of merit title

John Harrison completed a sensational year of North East/North West PGA golf with victory in the Tour Championship at Brancepeth Castle Golf Club, securing the order of merit title in the process.

Matfen Hall-based John shot 66 at Brancepeth to beat Ross Crowe by one as Mark Watkins (Hobson) and George Cowan (Westerhope) finished in a tie for third. John topped the 10-event order of merit with 1075 points, 31 points ahead of Morpeth’s David Clark – last year’s order of merit winner.

John, 59, said: “It’s a great feeling to top the order of merit after a season of good golf. I’ve played well, won six times, and really enjoyed my golf this season.

“I’m 60 next birthday and will clock up 42 years as a pro, so it’s nice to still be competing. The local circuit sets up nicely for the older guys, the courses aren’t too long and we can still compete with the young lads that crash it out there. Hopefully I can keep it going, it would be great to keep the run of winning at least once a year going for as long as possible.”
