Darlington team win season-long Northern Golfer matchplay event
Jill Richardson and Jo Marshall from Darlington Golf Club were crowned Northern Golfer Ladies Greensomes champions for 2016 with a dramatic playoff victory at Matfen Hall.
Having made the turn three down, Jill and Jo fought back on the back nine to reach the 18th all-square before beating Jane Jones (Bellingham) and Chris Lees (Hexham) at the first playoff hole – the par three 10th.
“We’re absolutely chuffed to bits,” said Jill. “The final was played in the most horrendous weather – heavy rain and strong wind – and we’d agreed to talk about taking the score after nine holes.
“We were three down at that point but wanted to play on and try and get back into the match.
“We did, with some super shots on the back nine, and hung in there despite the weather.”
Jill and Jo made it to the 18th tee level and halved the last before heading to the par three 10th for the playoff – where a three was good enough to win the trophy.
“We got to the turn and needed to stick in and play each shot one at a time,” added Jill.
“Having been knocked out in the first round last year, we’re thrilled to make it so far, meet some fantastic people and get the chance to play all over the region.
“We’ll be back at Matfen next year – when the weather improves a bit!”
Jill and Jo received the Ladies Greensomes trophy as well as a mini break for four people from event sponsors Matfen Hall.
