England Golf has named its four-player side for the European Young Masters at Parador de El Saler in Spain on July 23-25 – including Doncaster’s George Cooper.
George, Mariella Buchanan (Bristol & Clifton, Gloucestershire), Georgia Richardson (Stoneham, Hampshire) and Alfie Turner (Trentham, Staffordshire) will represent England. England Golf hall of famer Janet Melville will be team captain, while John Watson is team coach.
The competition, which began in 1995, has seen 30 editions to-date and Spain is the most decorated team with eight wins. England will be looking to emulate the team successes of 2013 and 2017 – and those of Bradley Moore, who won the individual boys’ event in 2013, and Lily May Humphreys, who triumphed in the girls’ event in 2017.
Last year, England girls’ squad star Ellie Lichtenhein won the girls’ title, while Annabel Peaford won the title in 2024. Men’s squad member Ben Bolton was boys’ champion in 2023. Other past English winners include Ben Parker (boys 2003) and Caitlin Whitehead (girls 2018), who joined players including Sergio Garcia (1995), Carlota Ciganda (2004) and Matteo Manassero (2007) on the event’s honours board.
George joins the team following his T2 finish in the Peter McEvoy Trophy as well as a third place finish in the French International U18 (Trophee Michel Carlhian), a T3 finish at the English U18 Amateur Championship (Mixed), a fourth place finish in the Welsh Open Youths (Mixed), and a T5 finish at the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters.
