Garesfield captains win Teams Handicap Championship

Garesfield Golf Club’s team of four captains lifted the Durham Golf Union’s Teams Handicap Championship trophy for the first time in the club’s history at Brancepeth Castle.

Bolstered by vice-captain Paul Foster’s nett 65, former captains John MacIntyre and Marc Coulthard weighed in with rounds of 75 and 77 respectively to ensure current captain Ian Foster could relax after his round of 80 was discarded in the team total of 217 – three shots lower than nearest rivals Consett.

Paul’s 65 also saw him finish runner-up in the individual event, which was won by Gary Kemp with a round of 63.

Consett’s team of Bob Hepplewhite, Gary Stafford, Paul Emery and Stephen Allison finished on 220 – with Crook’s team third on 221 while 2022 winners Bishop Auckland finished in a tie for fourth place alongside Eaglescliffe on 222.
