A quartet of young players from the North East made their England debuts after solid performances in the national schools championship.
Joe Robson, Alex Stevenson, Libby Bell and Adam Charlton were all capped as a result of their performances in the North of England Schools and England Schools Championships at The Shire London.
Last year’s Northern Golfer Junior Champion of Champions Joe (Prudhoe Community HS) won both his matches for the England combined team against Wales in a 13-5 win – playing in the top match on both occasions.
He travelled to South Wales straight from the British Boys Championship in Northern Ireland for the match at Llanwern, joining Yorkshire pair Charlotte Heath (Huddersfield Academy) and Evie Cooke (St Aidan’s) in the team.
England then took on Scotland in separate boys and girls matches at Lancaster Golf Club and Adam Charlton (Emmanuel College, Gateshead) won his foursomes and halved his singles match in a close encounter – England winning 10–8.
In the girls match, Alex Stevenson (Durham Sixth Form College) and Libby Bell (Gosforth Academy) were narrowly beaten 2&1. In the six singles, the scores were tied with one match left and Alex, last year’s Scottish Girls Open winner, delivered the win with a 2&1 victory.
