Durham mourns the death of former champion David Oughton

Durham – and Bishop Auckland – bade farewell to one of their finest golfers when David Oughton passed away at the age of 68.

David won the Durham Boys Championship in 1971, and a string of successes caught the eye nationally before he was capped for England Boys alongside Howard Clark and Mark James.

He was a member of the Bishop Auckland team which won the Durham County Clark Cup in 1973, 1975, 1976 and 1979 while individual success also came along with wins in the Durham County Matchplay Championship in 1973 and 1978, the Durham County Championship in 1976, and the Inter County Foursomes in 1978 with partner Lester Aisbitt.

A regular competitor on the 36-hole scratch scene, he had his fair share of success with victories in the Seaton Salver and Bishop Auckland Bowl as well as winning Bishop’s club championship four times.
