Darlington’s commitment to junior golf is paying off.
The Haughton Grange club’s youngsters have won the Durham County Southern League Championship for the first time after a sparkling season including 10 wins and just one defeat.
Team manager Alun Bell said: “The season has seen a fantastic effort from all the juniors. Team spirit has been the driving force to our success.
“The team has been a pleasure to manage with great commitment and I could not have wished for a better group.”
Ella Crang, Matty Bell, Olly Millichap, Jack Atkinson, Leon Austin, James Phetmalaikul, Jack Cheeseman, Harrison Hodgson, Ben Pilkington and Callum Moncur played their part throughout the season.
Added to the league success, the club also saw Hodgson and Millichap selected for North of England Boys squad.
Together with Bell, they also represented Durham this term while Crang captained Durham juniors.
The success is based on the work of the club’s JLOs and Saturday morning coaching classes run by professional James Cousins and his assistants Simon Calvert and Laura Harvey.
The club has developed an intermediate group of 30-plus handicappers who play on the Durham County Tour while it is also building a strong 7-10 years beginners group. Both groups also play in internal competitions every Sunday, playing off red and blue tees.
