Champion’s performance

Northern Golfer Men’s Champion of Champions winner Stew Fell had a week to remember at his first professional tournament – the EuroPro Tour’s Clipper Logistics Championship at Moor Allerton.

Tynemouth Golf Club-based Stew, who lifted the Champion of Champions title in 2017 at Ramside Hall as his girlfriend Rebecca Ferguson lifted the ladies title, shot rounds of 72 and 71 for a one over-par total – missing the cut by three shots on a low scoring week in Leeds.

“I’ve definitely got a new respect for what professional golfers go through on a weekly basis,” said Stew.

“The standard of golf was so much higher than I was expecting, with so many low scores which were totally beyond my game. I played some nice golf though, some of my best this season, and I had a chance to make the cut but stumbled over the last three holes.

“The highlight of the week came in the first round when I birdied the 18th, my ninth, and got some applause from the crowd. That was pretty cool.”

Stew won his club championship at Tynemouth earlier this season while Rebecca has won the titles at Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. Both will tee it up in the 2018 Champion of Champions at Ramside in September.
