Whitley Bay Golf Club’s junior team finished third in the Home Nations Inter-Club Championship in Portugal.
Playing at Morgado on The Algarve, the team of Rosie Belsham, Brandon Jones, Charlotte Pickering, James Burston, Aaron Blackwood and Jake Iredale competed in the week-long set of matches before beating New Club St Andrews 4.5-1.5 in the third place playoff as Bramshaw Golf Club beat Llanwern Golf Club to lift the trophy.
There was however individual success for Whitley Bay’s Rosie Belsham, who was the best performing girl from category one during the week.
Dave Burston, club captain and junior liaison officer, said: “It was great to be out there with the juniors and see them play so well over the three days.
“It was their fourth time in front of the Sky Sports cameras so they’re all naturals now and managed to concentrate on their golf. To see a group of young players who have grown up together achieve what they have this season has been fantastic. We can’t wait to get going again this season.”
Whitley Bay qualified for the event having finished runners up in the Northumberland Junior Golf League before winning through at the regional final at Clitheroe.
Meanwhile, as we went to press, Rosie Belsham started the season with a second place finish in the Scottish Girls’ Open Championship.
