Bishop Auckland Golf Club’s year of success continued in October – and it could get even better still.
On a super Sunday, Jamie Birkbeck won the Teesside Union Matchplay crown, Mike Ritson and Richard Reed won the Teesside Union Matchplay Pairs title, and the club’s Annodata Championship team claimed victory in the tournament’s quarter-finals to book a trip to Spain for the finals later this month.
The club’s league team has also lifted the Dixon Cup, played for by the five winners of the North East leagues, as well as the Teesside Union League title this season.
Jamie, who won the Teesside Union Mid-Amateur title earlier this year, won his second Teesside Matchplay title at Blackwell Grange Golf Club, beating Eaglescliffe’s Tom Smith in the semi-final 2up before beating Eaglescliffe’s Ryan Elliott in the final at the 21st hole.
“I reckon I played 39 holes and had 15 birdies and was eight under-par,” said Jamie, 42. “That just shows how well I had to play to win it.”
In the pairs final, Bishop’s Richard Reed and Mick Ritson beat Saltburn’s Tony Halliday and Michael Vickers at the second hole of a sudden death playoff to add another trophy to the club’s haul for 2019.
