The England Golf North Region squad produced a seven-shot victory in their triangular match with Yorkshire and the North West (Lancashire and Cheshire) at Moortown Golf Club.
The team of six, coached by JJ Vallely and managed by Bryan Ross at Matfen Hall, featured Northumberland’s Libby Bell, Zara Naughton, Faye Wheatley and Maggie Whitehead alongside Cumbria’s Abby Roper and Harriet Barker.
They returned a team score of 312 (best four scores counting towards the team total) to lead the elite event by seven shots. The North West team finished second with a score of 319 with Yorkshire third on 321.
Close House-based Maggie, 12, returned the joint best score of the day with her two over-par score with Libby one shot behind.
JJ said: “I’m really proud of the girls. They had a tough day on a tough golf course and showed grit and determination. Each of the girls is making great progress and it’s great to see them developing along a similar route to girls like Caitlin Whitehead, Rosie Belsham and Jess Baker, all of whom have gone through this process and stepped up into the national system”.
