Junior golfers from across Yorkshire took part in four regional Schools Championships in March, with individual and team scratch and nett winners crowned at each event.
This year’s North, South, East and West Schools Championships brought together more than 300 players at four venues – Howley Hall, Hull, Ripon City, and Wheatley.
In the South Yorkshire event at Wheatley, Chloe Wilson (Meadowhead) won the girls’ scratch title as Jack Emmingham (Delta Darton Academy) won the boys’ scratch title. The U16 girls’ event was won by Lily Scott (Tapton School) as Freddie Singh (Birkdale School) won the boys’ U16 title. The nett prize went to Miller Bird (King Ecgbert School). The team scratch title was won by Wath Academy (Ethan Clark, Will Bracha and Harrison Hall) as Meadowhead (Chloe Wilson, Freddie Fickling and Oliver Faulkner) won the nett team prize.
In the West Yorkshire event at Howley Hall, the girls’ scratch title went to Ava Chaplain (Ilkley Grammar School) as Zac Ayre (Ilkley Grammar School) won the boys’ scratch event. In the U16s, Tilly Boardman (St John Fisher) won the girls’ event as Max Parker (Allerton High School) won the boys’ title. The nett prize was won by Alfie Simpson (Whitcliffe Mount). In the team event, Allerton High School’s Max Parker and Oscar Hart teamed up to win both the scratch and nett prizes.
In the North Yorkshire event at Ripon City, Milla Dodds (Harrogate Grammar School) topped the girls’ scratch leaderboard as Ollie Scott (Nunthorpe Academy) won the boys’ scratch event. Ava McDaid (St John Fisher School) and Lewi O’Rourke (Sacred Heart Catholic Secondary School) won the girls’ and boys’ U16 titles respectively, as Josh Taylor (St Aidans C of E School) won the nett prize. The team scratch prize went to Nunthorpe (Ollie Scott, James Watkin and Samuel Scott) as St Aidans’ Jamie Dicker, Josh Taylor and Jia Teja won the nett team prize.
In the East Yorkshire event at Hull, Iona Mottram (Home School) won the girls’ scratch title as Tom Hinks (Hymers) led the field in the boys’ scratch event. Georgiana Ereira (Beverley High School) and Sam Wilson (Hymers) won the girls’ and boys’ U16 titles respectively, while Thomas Hooley (Ron Dearing UTC) won the nett prize. The team scratch event was won by Hymers’ Tom Hinks, Charles Hart and Max Walker as Hymers’ Edward Hart, Hugo Gibbons and Mason North won the nett team title.
Each of the boys’ and girls’ scratch winners will go on to compete in the North of England Schools Championship at Beamish Park in Durham on May 29.
The leading four teams from each of the regional venues will also progress to the Yorkshire Finals at Darrington, where they will compete for places in the England Team Finals at Woodhall Spa.
