Ryan Dixon enjoyed the biggest win of his burgeoning career with victory in the Welsh Youths at Wenvoe Castle.
The 19-year-old from Castle Eden Golf Club finished three shots clear of Letchworth’s Jack Slater to notch his first national title on his return from college in the US.
“I’m pretty happy,” said Dixon. “This is a big achievement for me. It was the first event I played in since coming back from St Mary’s University, St Antonio in Texas where I have just finished my first year.
“It’s the first time I have won a national tournament so it is up there. I have learned so much about myself and managing my emotions in America. I was watching people beat themselves up out there all day and I knew I just had to stay patient. I didn’t have that control before I went to America so I am really enjoying having that advantage.
“I just stuck to my game plan and nothing fazed me. I played pretty solid all four days.”
Dixon is hoping the victory could move him higher up the pecking order in England. “I have been part of the North of England coaching squad but I haven’t really been involved in the England setup,” he added. “Hopefully that can come if I build on this win. I take a lot of confidence from it and will take that into the next tournament, it is a big boost going forward.”
