The Cairndale Hotel and Spa in Dumfries retains Five Bubble Luxury status

Scotland’s top spa has retained the highest possible accolade in the UK industry with inspectors praising its “excellent service and fantastic facilities.”

The Cairndale Hotel and Spa in Dumfries was the first Scottish spa to be awarded Five Bubble Luxury status by the UK Good Spa Guide when it achieved the status in 2025. Confirming the award for 2026, the anonymous inspectors reported: “It delivers on every level. Thoughtful touches, exceptional treatments and extensive thermal experiences come together to create a truly memorable escape.”

Cairndale director Matthew Wallace Junior said: “This reaffirms our position as one of the finest spa experiences in the country and Scotland’s only independent spa to hold this level of distinction.

“It also reflects our unwavering commitment to exceptional guest experiences, meticulous attention to detail, and continuing investment in our facilities and team. When we created this spa in 2024, our ambition was to create something truly special – an experience that would stand alongside the very best in the UK while remaining proudly independent.”

The inspectors’ report also said: “We loved the thoughtful touches in this beautifully designed two-storey adults-only spa with the hydropool at its heart. On the food side, everything we tried was delicious, from the spa café to the newly refurbished bar and restaurant, The Oak, which blends comfort with timeless charm.”

The Good Spa Guide’s Five Bubble Luxury rating is reserved for those delivering exceptional experiences across facilities, service and cleanliness.

“Each element has been carefully curated to deliver a multi-sensory experience that blends relaxation with refinement,” added Matthew. “We’ve set a new standard for spa luxury and it’s gratifying to have this reconfirmed by the experts.”

The 86-bedroom family-owned-and-run hotel was also named Scotland’s Independent Hotel of the Year in the 2025 Scottish Excellence Awards, succeeding Andy and Kim Murray’s Cromlix House near Dunblane.
