Schools’ out

Arcot Hall Golf Club’s Rachel Gourley won the 2019 English Schools Golf Association National Under 16 Girls’ Championship by four shots at Cleckheaton & District Golf Club.

Rachel shot rounds of 76 and 77 to lead the field by four shots as Northumberland teammate Zara Naughton (Matfen Hall) finished in second place with rounds of 79 and 78 – reversing the placing from the North of England Schools qualifier earlier this year. Rachel added the title to her runner-up finish in the U19 Girls event at Sherwood Forest earlier this season.

In the U16 Boys event, Tynemouth’s Freddie McKenna finished in fifth place, seven shots behind winner Finn Nelson from Nottinghamshire. Cameron Thorburn (Ponteland) finished in seventh place while Finlay Bell and Angus Buchanan finished inside the top 20.

In the Boys U19 event at Sherwood Forest, Yorkshire’s Joshua Barry took top spot as Northumberland’s Alex Heppell finished inside the top 20.

Rachel will now represent England against the Welsh Schools, having already earned a place in the team to face Scotland following the U19 Championship.
