Morpeth’s Sandy Twynholm produced a superb two under-par round of 70 to win the Newcastle & District Golf League’s Players Championship in tough conditions at City of Newcastle Golf Club.
Northumberland’s most capped player, Sandy led the field at the City as Prudhoe’s Ben Lee finished in second place with a round 73. In the team event, featuring three players from each of the league’s clubs, City of Newcastle’s Paul Souter, Zak Laws and Alex Dixon led the field with a combined score of 213.
Sandy – a seven-time county strokeplay champion and county champion in 2004 – said: “It’s great to be back at the top of a leaderboard to finish off the season. This year has been pretty mixed and I’ve not had too many low scores, so I was happy to get it round the City in 70 in really tough conditions. I’ve been playing a little less this year and want to push on a bit more over the winter, particularly with my son, Cameron, starting to play some really good golf.”
