Roseberry Grange’s Bob Ellison and John Jamfrey win the Northern Golfer Match Play Pairs

After a long season of matches across the region, Roseberry Grange-based Bob Ellison and John Jamfrey lifted the Northern Golfer Match Play Pairs trophy at George Washington.

Roseberry Grange director and secretary Bob and committee member John won the final of the 24th staging of the event – beating Durham City-based Gary Wright & George Turnbull 1up.

Having raced ahead in the final, Bob had a chance to go 6up with a birdie two at the ninth but had to settle for a par and a half as George made a superb up and down from right of the green. The Durham City pair then rallied on the back nine – winning the 10th and 11th holes with birdies. They would also birdie the 14th before winning the 16th and 17th holes to take the game to the last. There, Bob held his nerve and holed a superb second putt on the final green for a par to halve the hole and win the match by the narrowest of margins.

“It’s a great feeling to be Match Play Pairs champions,” said Bob. “This is our biggest golfing achievement and we’re proud to have represented the club and made it all the way to the final. To win is the icing on the cake.”

With the win, Bob and John earned an invitation to compete in one of Albatross Golf Holidays & Events’ pairs events in 2026 as well as £600 in prize vouchers from Custom Fit Golf, run by PGA professional Shaun Cowell.

Entries for the 25th Northern Golfer Match Play Pairs event will open in February 2026.
