Peter Caveney aiming to get back on track

Peter Caveney is aiming to get his golf career back on track in 2025 after a horror car crash which threatened to end his professional career just months after it began.

Peter, from Middlesbrough, was heading home on the A19 on June 24, having just competed in Open Qualifying at Fulford, when a car pulled out from a junction at Hutton Henry. Travelling at 70mph, Peter managed to swerve to avoid a catastrophic collision with the car, but clipped its front wing, sending his car rolling down the road – eventually coming to rest in the grass verge facing the opposite direction.

“I’m very thankful to have come out of the crash as well as I did,” said Peter, who was treated in hospital for an injured wrist and bruised lung initially. “I spent three days in hospital and that’s where they found the subarachnoid haemorrhage [bleeding on the surface of the brain]. The physical injuries were sore, but the brain injury affected me the most.”

Peter still suffers from severe headaches following the crash, and takes 24 hours to recover after playing 18 holes. His other symptoms, including vertigo and photosensitivity, have reduced since he received a clear CT scan in September, though they can still affect his day-to-day life.

“The vertigo was a huge problem for golf, I couldn’t stand to chip or putt at first,” added Peter. “Thankfully, that’s reduced, and I can practice for an hour or two before I’m exhausted. That’s not ideal as a young lad who wants to play tour golf, but it’s getting better, and I hope I’ll be recovered enough to get back to playing mini tour golf in 2025.”

Peter is aiming to play on the Tartan Pro Tour in 2025, combining summer touring with coaching at Yarm Driving Range – where he is based two days per week.

“I’m looking forward to being back on the course competing having been stopped just a few events into my first season as a pro. My game is still there, playing just wipes me out the following day. The recovery time is long, but I’m hopeful it’ll get shorter as I get more reps in.

“I’m so thankful for all the support I’ve had these last few months, from the golf community and my fellow professionals. I’ve been very lucky and I want to get back to playing now.”
