Prudhoe Golf Club’s Richard Hannam will hit the most important shot of his golfing career at The Belfry in September.
Hannam (pictured right), who was one of 10 qualifiers in The Million Dollar Hole in One challenge run in conjunction with American Golf, will have a chance to win $1m at The Belfry’s iconic 18th with a hole-in-one.
Having qualified from 7,000 entrants at American Golf with a shot to within six inches, he said: “You go and play a competition and, if you’re lucky, you might win ahead of 150 players, which is a great achievement. But to do so well when there’s nearly 7,000 participants is something else!”
Having reached the age of 70 and played golf for 50 years, Hannam set himself three objectives for 2017: shoot lower than his age, go to St Andrews and get his first hole-in-one.
He achieved the first at Allendale Golf Club with a gross score of 69 and has planned a trip to St Andrews later this year.
“What better way to achieve my hole-in-one target than with success at The Belfry?” added Hannam. “An odds-against event I know but the pressure of the prize on offer will be a big advantage.”
