New adventure begins at Virtual Fairways in Darlington

Passionate golfer and army veteran Michael Harrold has launched Virtual Fairways in Darlington – with three indoor bays featuring TrackMan and ProTee technology to deliver industry-leading data and course simulation for beginners through to tour professionals.

Having served in the British Army for 24 years, Michael worked in construction before launching Virtual Fairways in Evans Business Park in February 2026.

Having undertaken months of research before choosing the TrackMan iO and ProTee VX launch monitors for the simulator bays, and completed a great deal of the fit out himself, Michael has received lots of positive feedback since opening.

“Starting a new business is incredibly exciting and I’m proud of what I’ve created,” said Michael. “I’ve always liked using the driving range but wanted more information when I practised. I started looking at the technology years ago, and it has really come on in the last few years.”

Having had to move out of the construction industry due to a shoulder injury, Michael identified a gap in the market for an indoor facility in Darlington, put together a business plan, secured funding, and created his new business.

“There are a lot more indoor golf spaces opening up at clubs, which is great, but I was keen to create something which was truly open to all,” he explained. “We have packages and memberships for regular users, but there are no limits on who can come in, when you can use the space, or anything like that. We also don’t have any attachments, so professionals can teach if they want, or a business can hire the whole space and have it to themselves.”

Virtual Fairways is home to one TrackMan iO bay as well as two ProTee VX bays with GSPro simulation software. There is also a fully licensed bar.

“I spent a long time visiting simulators,” added Michael. “The technology from TrackMan is industry-leading and fantastic, but everyone who has used the ProTee system has been very impressed. It’s an incredible piece of kit which I’m very happy with, and I’ve priced it exactly the same as the TrackMan bay because of that.

“There are lots of little touches which came up in my research too. They’re all little things, but having plenty for space for people and their golf bags is key, as is good seating areas. We also have screens which rotate so everyone can watch what’s happening, while there are hire clubs and training aids which anyone is free to use.

“The tech is really important, but I think the little touches and being truly open to anyone – from a tour player to someone who has never played before to come in whenever they want – really sets this place apart and I’d love people to come in and try it out.”
