Matfen Hall’s Zara Naughton joined the growing list of our region’s best players to win at the Home of Golf with victory in the Wee Wonders 2018 Grand Final.
Zara won the 36-hole girls 11-12 event over the Strathtyrum course at St Andrews with rounds of 73 and 65 for a 138 total, winning the event from Grace Crawford on countback.
She said: “This was my fifth time at the Grand Final and I’m really proud to have won the trophy for the first time. I played really well both days and holed a lot of putts in the second round, particularly on the back nine where I was four under-par.
“My plan now is to get down to scratch and win my place in the England Regional Squad. From there I want to represent England,” added Zara.
Five golfers represented Matfen Hall at the Grand Final – an unprecedented feat for one golf club. Zara’s sister Charlotte finished 15th in the girls 9-10 category, Autumn Buchanan was 17th in the girls 5-8 event, Harry Hadley finished 25th in the boys 7-8 event and Rachel Batey finished 30th in the girls 9-10 category.
