Katie closes out win

Carlisle Golf Club’s Katie Sibley added the North Region Close Championship title to her golfing résumé at Silloth on Solway Golf Club before heading off to college in the US.

Katie recorded a two under-par total over two rounds to win the overall title at the event, which brings together female golfers from across Cumbria, Cheshire, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland, Yorkshire and the Isle of Man. As well as winning the overall title, Katie helped Cumbria win the team gross and nett titles.

Katie said: “It was brilliant to win the North Region Close Championship. I was happy with the start I made in the first round, shooting three over-par as the conditions were so difficult. To shoot five under-par in the second round was amazing and I’m so proud to bring the trophy back to Cumbria while helping Cumbria win the team trophy for the first time.

“The highlight of the event was helping to put a really positive light on women’s golf in Cumbria and playing well before leaving for America. It definitely raised my confidence. It’s been a really busy year with exams and preparing for college so it was a perfect confidence boost to set me up to try and play well in the US.”

Following the event, Katie headed off to Lenoir Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina where she is majoring in Exercise Science.

Meanwhile, Bishop Auckland Golf Club’s Jessica Hall finished in second place with rounds of 77 and 71. Matfen Hall’s Zara Naughton won the U14 title at the event, posting rounds of 83 and 72 to win the trophy.
