George Washington is celebrating rapid growth in the number of youngsters in membership, with the group growing from 20 to more than 100 in 12 months.
Young players are being welcomed to the club and its driving range, which is home to Toptracer technology and a Sweetspot booking system, before making the move out to the golf course – where they can join in regular junior get-togethers and represent the re-established junior team in matches.
“Having seen numbers drop in recent years, it’s great to see the junior section growing rapidly,” said golf operations manager Brian Brodie. “In the last 12 months we have made improvements to the course and driving range, with lots more people coming through including youngsters. It’s fantastic to see people coming in to try the game and then make the move out onto the golf course and into membership, and we have a structured programme for juniors taking them right up to the age of 21.”
With the rapid expansion of the junior section, Brian and the team supporting junior golf at the club – including junior liaison officer Paul Ord and several other volunteers – are looking to develop more junior competitions and work with PGA professional JJ Vallely to introduce coaching programmes.
“A thriving junior section is great for our club, and juniors are the future of the game. We want to develop more for them in the weeks and months ahead – watch this space,” added Brian.
