Heworth’s year

Members of Heworth Golf Club will be able to look back on 2018 as a stellar golfing year, in which they picked up a number of county titles.

The club achieved victories in Durham’s County Foursomes, Mixed Foursomes, Matchplay Championship, Clubs Championship Qualifier and Clark Cup in 2018.

Will Marshall, 19, was at the heart of much of the club’s success – partnering Aaron Scott to the Durham County Foursomes Trophy at Westerhope before narrowly missing out on the inter-county crown. He went on to win the Matchplay Championship, edging out Tyneside’s James Wilson 1up in the final at Durham City before partnering 12-year-old Zara Naughton to win the Mixed Foursomes at Consett, where they comprehensively defeated Beamish Park’s Tom Skelton and Gabrielle Dickinson 7&6 in the final.

An integral part of the Heworth team which won the Clubs Championship Qualifier at Ravensworth, he also played his part in the club reaching the final of the Clark Cup. Though Will missed the final against Wynyard at Castle Eden, the team of Nigel Ralph, Dave Moralee, Mark McAllister, Aaron Scott and Jason McGuire won a thriller 3-2 to lift the trophy.

The club will be looking to maintain the success in 2019 as it prepares to host the English Boys Strokeplay Championship in 2020.
