Goswick’s new par three seventh hole opens for play

Goswick Golf Club has officially opened its new seventh hole less than five months after beginning construction.

The short but challenging par three, designed by golf course architects Mackenzie & Ebert, replaces the par three ninth hole. The change sets the stage for other significant improvements to follow, including a reconfiguration of the first hole and the creation of a new short game practice facility. Work on these changes is set to begin this autumn.

“This new hole looks fantastic,” said four-time DP World Tour winner Stephen Gallacher, who got a sneak peek of the hole just before it officially opened. “I think the best par threes in the world are all short. The 12th at Augusta, the Postage Stamp at Troon, the 17th at TPC Sawgrass, the seventh at Pebble Beach… It could be a sand-wedge downwind to a seven-iron into the wind. I think that’s what makes it a brilliant par three.”

The creation of the new seventh hole is a major milestone in Goswick’s front nine improvement plan, which was proposed by Mackenze & Ebert and approved overwhelmingly by the club’s membership in 2022. Since then, the club has improved the green surrounds at the second and third holes, built new tees and significantly resculpted the green on the fourth hole, and built new tees on the fifth and sixth holes which have added length. While the new seventh hole was built, a new tee complex was also created for the eighth hole, and this is also now in play.
