European success for our region’s youngsters

group of our region’s most talented youngsters finished off the 2018 season in style at the European Junior Golf Championships in Spain.

The group included a trio of girls from Northumberland – Zara Naughton (Matfen Hall), Faye Wheatley (Gosforth Park Ladies) and Libby Bell (Gosforth Park Ladies) along with Northumberland boys Cameron Thorburn (Westerhope), Jack McCall (Westerhope) and Jai Scott (Newbiggin), and Yorkshireman Charlie Littlewood (Rudding Park).

Having qualified at Longhirst Hall, the girls impressed in the U18 event over five rounds, which was held over two courses at Alcaidesa Golf Club, near Estapona.

Heading into the final round in front of the Sky Sports cameras, Faye was lying in second position with Zara in sixth place and Libby in eighth position. Libby moved up the leaderboard with a one under-par 73 to finish third overall as Zara posted a final round of 76 and Faye posted a round of 79 to finish in a tie for fourth place, one shot behind Libby.

Meanwhile, in the boys category, which featured 87 players from around Europe, Jai finished in a tie for 27th place as Cameron finished in 43rd place and Jack missed the cut. Charlie had the best finish among the boys as he finished in 14th place.

The boys’ event was won by Doncaster’s Josh Berry while the girls’ event was won by Stock Brook Manor’s Holly Haslam.
