England completed the third step of the Home Internationals clean sweep with victory in the seniors event at Alnmouth Golf Club.
Alnmouth, celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019, hosted the Northern Counties Qualifying Championship – AKA The Big Six – earlier this year and welcomed the best senior men’s players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales for three days of matches.
The England team, which was crowned European Men’s Senior champions earlier this summer, beat Wales and Ireland before tying the final match with 2018 winners Scotland to secure the trophy with more points earned over the first two days.
Scotland had led 2½–½ after the foursomes but England fought back to tie the match in the singles – Yorkshiremen Richard Jones and Richard Norton both delivering vital points.
Peter Simpson, club manager at Alnmouth Golf Club, said: “It was great to host such a big event in our 150th year. The feedback from all the players was fantastic, everything went really well from our side and we couldn’t have asked for a better end to what’s been a brilliant year for our club.”
