Leading North East professional Phil Carlaw retires after nearly 40 years in the business
Whether you were a regular at Boldon Golf Club or Parklands, or a visitor to Philips Golf, many golfers in the North East will have met, worked with or sought the advice of Phil Carlaw.
One of the region’s most respected professionals, Phil retires this month after nearly 40 years in the golf business – and is looking forward to spending more time on the golf course and with his family.
Phil, who setup Philips Golf nine years ago having turned professional at the age of 18 and trained as an assistant at Whickham Golf Club under David Hunter, before becoming part of the successful Phipps Golf at Boldon then Parklands, plans to move to Spain later this year.
He said: “In 38 years as a professional I’ve seen a lot in the golf business and been lucky enough to meet so many great people at Boldon, Parklands and Philips Golf.
“My passion has always been for business and retail, and providing a great service to golfers of all abilities. I’m proud to have built so many longstanding friendships in my career and to have been able to make my living in the golf industry.
“I’d like to thank all of our customers, those which date back to the Boldon days and those who have found us at Philips Golf, and I hope they continue to enjoy their golf as we plan to in the future.”
Phil, his wife Angela and son James were all part of Philips Golf, and Phil is looking forward to spending more time with his family away from work.
“We’ve spent a lot of time together but we’re all looking forward to relaxing over in Spain and playing some golf as a family.”
PGA professional David Forster, part of the Philips Golf team for nine years, has moved to Whickham Golf Club as head PGA professional and will be based at the club’s new Hollinside Golf Academy.
Phil added: “David is an incredibly talented professional with a great passion for coaching. I’m sure he’ll enjoy working at the fantastic new facilities at Whickham and I wish him every success.”
