Team bidding to win the Mail on Sunday Classic after superb run
Consett will fly the flag for the region in Spain next month.
The Co Durham club is through to the finals of the Mail on Sunday Classic after a thumping quarter-final win over Scottish champions Lochgelly.
The Consett squad will fly out to the El Rompido resort in Spain for the finals on November 19-26 along with Kenwick Park, who ended Yorkshire’s interest in the tournament with an extra time win over Cleckheaton, as well as Porter’s Park and South Staffs.
The draw for the semi-finals is yet to be made but they will be on November 22 with the final the following day.
Being at home to Lochgelly was a clear advantage, but the Consett team have had their fair share of away ties and had to win at Hobson and Garesfield in the first two rounds before being at home to Matfen Hall.
They then won at Ryton, at home to Penrith, a marathon away to Chester-le-Street where the deciding match went to the 23rd hole before John Kennedy sealed the result, then they beat Swanston and Lochgelly at home. That quarter-final result was 4-1 with Lochgelly only managing two halved matches – against Consett’s top two players Mark Bonser and Kennedy while James Newton won 2up as Brian Wigwam and Mark Dorrit had thumping wins 6&4 and 5&4. Consett will now be trying to become only the second North East team to win the event following Seaton Carew in 2014.
