Clark top of the order

Morpeth Golf Club’s David Clark was crowned NE/NW PGA Order of Merit winner for 2017 at Matfen Hall as fellow Morpeth pro Martyn Jobling and Hexham’s Philip Waugh shared the top prize in the circuit’s Tour Championship.

Clark added a top-10 in the Tour Championship to his PGA Championship success and pro am wins at Archerfield, Prudhoe, Middlesbrough, Seaton Carew and Morpeth this season to lead the season-long points race.

Jobling and Waugh shared top honours in the Tour Championship at Matfen Hall with rounds of 67 as Craig Goodfellow finished third with a round of 69.

Meanwhile, a busy September saw eight pros pick up wins on the pro am circuit as Goodfellow lifted the Match Play Championship trophy – beating Mark Ridley in the final.

Michael Nesbit and Simon Robinson shared the top prize at Barnard Castle with rounds of 67 while Northern Golfer columnist John Harrison shot a round of 65 to win at Brampton.

Goodfellow picked up another win in a successful year at Middlesbrough Municipal (65); Darren Pearce led the field at Carlisle with a round of 66; Simon Calvert won at Rockliffe Hall; and Simon Robinson took top spot on his own at Bellingham (66) and Bishop Auckland (68).

The NE/NW PGA season continues in October with pro am events at Silloth, Archerfield and Rockliffe Hall, as well as the annual Portugal Pro Am.
